Computational Models for Predicting Visual Target Distinctness
Authors: Jose A. Garcia, Joaquin Fdez-Valdivia, Xose R. Fdez-Vidal and Roas Rodriguez-Sanchez
Publisher: SPIE (International Society for Optical Engineering) Press, 2001 - ISBN: 0819439967

Visual target acquisition is a complex process, and many of the factors involved are not yet fully understood. But one thing is evident: the more a target stands out from its background the easier it is to detect and the quicker it will be found. Therefore it is likely that visual; target distinctness is important in determining visual search performance. This book uses computer vision models to examine two situations in the prediction of visual target distinctness. In the first situation, it may be assumed that the structure of the target-and-background scene and the non-target image can be determined exactly. Various computational models address the problem of how to select the relevant data from all data filtering through a bottleneck caused by attentional limitations. In the second situation, target and non-target scenes cannot be determined exactly; hence, images are characterised statistically by discrete probability distributions. Due to the large number of information measures available, one must first determine what postulates and properties should be satisfied, and then establish the amount of relative information between the respective distributions for the target image and the non-target image.

Forensic Art and Illustration
Authors: Karen T. Taylor
Publisher: CRC Press, 2000 - ISBN: 0849381185

Forensic illustration has become increasingly important as a tool for identifying both perpetrators and victims. The author is a leading forensic artist who aims to provide complete coverage of all aspects of the field. Beginning with the first in-depth documentation of the history of forensic art, this book proceeds logically through explanations of facial anatomy, practical methodologies and techniques, and case examples. More than 800 illustrations and photographs depict art methods used for identifying and locating crime victims and criminal offenders. Numerous successful examples, taken from actual solved cases, demonstrate applications of the methods and techniques presented. The author explains the characteristics of human facial anatomy, composite drawing, interviewing, age-progression by growth and ageing, image modification, post-mortem drawing and two-dimensional skull reconstruction. David Glassman has contributed a chapter on the skull-to-photo superimposition to aid in the identification of human skeletal remains by forensic anthropologist.

Forensic Uses of Digital Imaging
Authors: John C. Russ
Publisher: CRC Press, 2001 - ISBN: 0849309034

This book shows step-by-step how to use digital imaging to its best advantage. Written by the author of the best-selling Image Processing Handbook, it uses numerous examples to explore when and why some procedures are appropriate and what they can be expected to reveal. It demonstrates just what the advantages and shortcomings of digital imaging are and how computer image processing can be used to enhance the ability to access detail without compromising the truth of images. The author uses examples of digital images to demonstrate the proper use of image processing (as well as common errors) and the artefacts produced in digital imaging that can be useful in forensics. The author goes on to describe examples and procedures derived from a wealth of personal experience in both civil and criminal trials.
